Influenza season is just round the corner once more. But this time, it could be coming camouflaged as a serial killer. There's deep concern a new killer flu, nicknamed "Swine Flu," may mix with standard influenza and kill many millions of people.
Some years ago when the bird flu pandemic was a threat this is how Robert Webster of St Jude Kids's Research Hospital in Memphis characterized it -- and take note that Dr Webster has been studying influenza for the past forty years:.
"This pathogen right from the start is perhaps the worst flu pathogen, vis being highly pathogenic, that I have ever seen or worked with.".
During that pandemic threat public health gurus, including those at the World Health Organization, feared a disaster. In preparation, the U. S. ordered 2.3 million amounts of an antiviral called "Tamiflu." 2.3 million for a country of three hundred million.
The US made a decision to place all of its chips on an experimental vaccine, a vaccine that was reliant on an early seed of bird influenza, which most gurus agree has mutated into something quite different, and that suggested that when bird influenza arrived in the U.S., it might not make a response to any vaccine. The most stupefying fact about that new bird flu pathogen, like the current swine flu pathogen is how much science doesn't know about it.
The clicker remained...how did folk become infected.
Is it by breathing the air near feces? By eating duck meat? By touching? No-one actually knew....and may still not know.
In the meantime , health authorities continued to massacre infected fowl, experiment with genetic divergences, and run PC simulations on panic control.
It's obvious that first responders would be absolutely overwhelmed, as will mortuaries in the event of a true outbreak. If you are not concerned at that point, then take a minute to read the cover essay of the October 2005 issue of National Geographic. Then ask, what are the percentages a killer pathogen will hit my home city, my folks this influenza season?
